FAQs

Renovation Electrical FAQ

Yes — any new electrical installation or modification in a kitchen or bathroom must be carried out by a licensed electrician in Queensland. This includes new power points, lighting installations, appliance connections, exhaust fans, and any changes to existing circuits. DIY electrical work is illegal under Queensland’s Electrical Safety Act 2002 and can void your home insurance and your renovation warranty. AJ Electrical QLD holds a current Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence (Lic No: 92918).

A kitchen renovation usually involves new lighting — typically LED downlights, pendant lights over an island, and under-cabinet lighting — plus additional or repositioned power points, and dedicated circuits for the oven, cooktop, rangehood, and dishwasher. If you’re adding a new appliance layout or island bench, you may also need a switchboard upgrade to accommodate the additional circuits. We scope all of this before we quote so there are no surprises mid-renovation.

Bathroom electrical work in Queensland must comply with AS/NZS 3000 (Australian Wiring Rules) and Queensland’s building codes. The 2022 NCC amendments introduced new requirements for bathroom ventilation — exhaust fans must now discharge directly to the outside of the building, not into roof spaces or other ventilated areas. Bathrooms without natural ventilation also require minimum make-up air provisions. All light fittings, exhaust fans, and power outlets must be rated for wet or damp areas as appropriate. We ensure all bathroom electrical work is correctly specified and fully compliant.

The key is involving your electrician early — ideally at the planning stage, before walls are opened. The rough-in stage (running cables and conduit before walls are closed) needs to happen at the right point in the build sequence. Fit-off (installing fittings, switches, and power points) happens once walls are finished and painted. We work directly with your builder or project manager to establish these timing points and make sure we’re on site when needed — so the electrical never holds up the rest of the build

Renovation electrical costs vary significantly depending on the scope — a bathroom refresh with new downlights and an exhaust fan is a very different job to a full kitchen rewire with new appliance circuits and a switchboard upgrade. We provide free, detailed quotes for all renovation electrical work before any work begins. The earlier you get us involved in the renovation planning, the more accurately we can scope and quote the electrical component. Call us on 0428 498 324 or request a quote online.
