Switchboard Upgrades Gold Coast

Safety, Compliance & Peace of Mind

Is Your Gold Coast Switchboard Safe and Compliant?

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system. If it still has ceramic fuses, lacks safety switches on all circuits, or hasn’t been updated since before 2000 — it may be unsafe, non-compliant, and unable to handle the demands of modern appliances. From 1 January 2025, all new and altered residential switchboards in Queensland must comply with the updated Electrical Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Regulation 2024 and AS/NZS 3000:2018 — requiring RCDs or RCBOs on every power and lighting circuit.

AJ Electrical QLD provides licensed switchboard upgrades, fuse box replacements, and safety switch installations for homes and businesses across the Gold Coast. Whether you have ceramic fuses that need replacing, a switchboard that keeps tripping, or a rental property that needs to meet current Queensland compliance requirements — we’ll assess it, quote it clearly, and get it done properly.

FAQs

Switchboard Upgrade FAQ

The clearest signs are ceramic fuses — if your switchboard has round, porcelain fuse holders rather than switch-style circuit breakers, it’s outdated and non-compliant. Other signs include circuits that trip frequently or won’t reset, flickering lights, a burning smell near the board, hot power points, or no safety switches on your power or lighting circuits. If you’re planning a renovation, adding solar, installing an EV charger, or starting a new tenancy on a rental property — your switchboard should be assessed before that work begins. If in doubt, call us and we’ll tell you straight.

From 1 January 2025, all new switchboard installations and alterations in Queensland must comply with the Electrical Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Regulation 2024 and AS/NZS 3000:2018 — requiring RCDs or RCBOs on every power and lighting circuit. RCBOs are now the preferred device for new installations, as they combine the protection of a safety switch (RCD) and a circuit breaker in one unit. Old-style ceramic fuses and rewirable fuse holders are non-compliant and must be replaced. These requirements apply to any new work on a switchboard — not just full replacements. If your electrician is doing work on your board, the circuits they work on must meet the new standard.

An RCD (Residual Current Device), also called a safety switch, protects people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to earth and cutting the power within milliseconds. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuits. An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent Protection) combines both functions in a single device — providing personal shock protection and circuit overload protection at the same time. Under Queensland’s updated 2025 requirements, RCBOs are the preferred device for all new and upgraded switchboards because they provide comprehensive protection on every individual circuit.

Possibly — and it’s worth checking before you list. Queensland law requires safety switches on all power circuits when a home is sold, and safety switches on power and lighting circuits for rental properties. Under the 2025 regulations, rental properties starting a new tenancy with a non-compliant switchboard must be upgraded within 90 days. A non-compliant switchboard can delay a property sale, affect your insurance, or expose you to liability as a landlord. We carry out pre-sale and pre-lease switchboard assessments across the Gold Coast and can advise on what’s required for your specific situation.

Most residential switchboard upgrades on the Gold Coast cost between $1,200 and $2,000, depending on the size of your home, the number of circuits, whether asbestos is present, and the condition of the existing board. We provide free, upfront quotes before any work begins — so you know exactly what you’re up for before we start. Call us on 0428 498 324 or request a quote online.
